Creating Your Own Gluten Free Flour

Previously, we’ve talked about creating your own gluten free mixes, but today I’m going to show you a little video clip about how I make my own gluten free flours.

The advantage to creating your own flours is that you can create really fresh flour that will give you a better baking result. One of the hardest things about gluten free baking is the number of flours required per recipe. One solution is to create mixes. Another solution is to buy a mix.

But today, we’re going to talk about grinding your own flour with a grain mill.

For example, if you need white rice flour, grind white rice. If you need brown rice flour, grind brown rice. With your own grinder, you don’t have to store so many flours. My grinder will grind the following flours:

  • Corn
  • Buckwheat
  • Sorghum
  • Millet
  • Oats
  • Rices
  • Garbanzo beans (for bean flours)

So you can have a variety of gluten free flours just by storing the grain. The only real downside to using a grinder is that it has to be a dedicated grinder. Right after we purchased this grinder, my husband was grinding wheat. No problem, right? because I wasn’t going to eat any….

Wrong.

The dust from the wheat grinding made me sick in a very short time. It took me a while to figure out what caused the reaction. So, please keep your grinder dedicated just for gluten-free grinding.

Here’s the little clip I made showing how I use the grinder. It’s very simple. Just pour in the grain and flip the switch!

If you would like one of these handy little grinders, I’ve created a link:

Also, the Flip camera that I just bought is sooooo fun! Very easy to use. It’s not expensive, stores two hours of video, and has great imaging.
